China and Human Rights: Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist and political activist that has been missing since Sunday April 3rd when he was detained by police in Beijing as he prepared to fly to Taiwan.  The Chinese authorities were unavailable for comment until Wednesday, when they printed in the state-run newspaper, The Global Times, an editorial that stated “Ai Weiwei […] has been close to the red line of Chinese law. As long as Ai Weiwei continuously marches forward, he will inevitably touch the red line one day.” The newspaper added “Ai Weiwei will be judged by history, but he will pay a price for his special choice.’

The charges that he is being held with have never been officially released, although allegations made through the state-run media have included economic crimes and inciting subversion.  Two days before his detainment he participated in an interview with China Really Sucks, about China’s inhuman policies and his own involvement in undermining the CCP.  He stated, in the interview, that he expected to soon be arrested and refused to go the route of exiled critic.

Known globally for much more than his political activism, his installment at the Tate Modern Museum in London, Sunflower Seeds, has been met with praise and is one of many permanent installations around the world.  A project planned by Ai Weiwei that will fill the Pulitzer Fountain outside of the Plaza Hotel in New York, will go ahead without the artist’s presence.

Hie detainment has, in the spirit of his political involvement, stimulated a rise in political graffiti in the Honk Kong area and has authorities looking for a street artist responsible for the prevalent Who’s Afraid of Ai Weiwei stencil.

Since his arrest, those who have fought for his release have continued to disappear including, most recently Liu Xiaoyuan, a lawyer who has spoken out for Ai Weiwei and a number of other detained activists.

Cater your next picnic: Mobile Taco Bike

Seen at BikeRumor, this Gary Fisher and Trek Transport collaboration is sick.  Featuring a custom fit cutting board on the front and a butane burner on the back, this taco bike was designed specifically as a promotion for NAHBS in Austin Texas.  It demonstrates what can effectively be done on a well prepared bike and the success that it achieved at the show, feeding 200+ people catfish tacos, should be an inspiration to a new generation of bicycle based entrepreneurs.

Sticking to the theme of mobile food prep, don’t forget about Off the Grid tonight at Kezar. Amazing food trucks of all varieties.

Nine Types of Light

The album was just released yesterday, and wasting no time, TV on the Radio has released this hour-long video with every song off of Nine Types of Light.

In case you haven’t gotten their newest album yet, and need a soundtrack for the rest of your day in the office, here is is.

Also, for some extra enlightenment, check out the New York Times Interview where they discuss making a feature length video for their album.”Growing up in a DIY culture you can get it together and make something,” explains Tunde Adebimpe, “If you have a pen and a paper, and a stapler, you can make a book. You know… and if you have copy machine you can be a publisher. That was a really important thing to get shown.”
